Description

Mount Rushmore National Memorial is a granite sculpture carved into the face of a mountain near Keystone, South Dakota. The monument is comprised 60-foot sculptures of the heads of four notable United States presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln.

Construction of the memorial began in 1927, with the presidents' faces being finished between 1934 and 1939.

The site contains a large amphitheater for viewing, as well as a trail leading below the monument for a better view. There is a visitor center on site with a miniature display of the monument, as well as exhibits showcasing the history of its construction. The trail to the base of the monument also leads past the Sculptor's Studio, which goes further in depth about the construction and difficulties faced during execution.
