Description

Whether or not you actually make it to the "High Dune," a trip into the Saharan-like landscape here is well worth the effort. There are no trails and the dunes are constantly shifting, so each visit is likely to be different. Either way, if you make your way to the top of any dune, the views are spectacular and totally unique for this region.

Please note that if you're visiting in the warm months, you should start early to avoid the scorching daytime temps on the dunes. Additionally, in the spring, it can be very windy in the area and the weather can be unpredictable so be prepared for unpredictable weather while on the dunes.

Medano Creek is a seasonal creek at the base of the sand dunes, and is typically flowing from October - July with peak flow being in May. The creek's depth and duration is dependent on snowpack so it will vary from year to year. The creek is usually dry in August and September; otherwise be prepared to cross the stream on your way to High Dune.

Half-Day Run: Park at the main dune lot, cross Medano Creek and choose your own adventure!
