Portici Cemetery [Suggest Edits]

Description

The original house of ten rooms with brick gables was razed during the second battle of Manassas, and now one can only imagine its beauty. All of the old Cater mansions in this area were examples of fine architecture and gentility; such as "Sudley House" , "Red Hill" , etc.

"Portici" was the scene of some bitter fighting during the first and second Battles of Manassas. Today, the very old cemetery located on the property is surrounded by a stone wall and thick with shrubs. This, along with the shade of the trees that surround it, provide this cemetery with an air of twilight. Many of the stones are so lichen covered that it is impossible to read the various epitaphs that are in small letters. Several of the stones have no inscriptions.
