Phantom Ship [Suggest Edits]

Description

Phantom Ship Island is one of the spectacular highlights of Crater Lake National Park. Seen easily from Rim Road, this rock formation will capture the imagination of youngsters and adults alike. Especially if you're visiting the park on a foggy day, the andesite spires of the island really do resemble a pirate ship.

Formed nearly 400,000 years ago, the island speaks to the volcanic history of the area. The rock was altered by hydrothermal activity caused by the volcano that slumbers beneath the park.

Short Walk: Various viewpoints of the island are available from Rim Drive, which is open seasonally. Parking is available at the Sun Notch trailhead, located on the southern rim of Crater Lake.
