The name "Old Faithful" is nearly synonymous with Yellowstone National Park, and a visit to the geyser makes it clear why this has become such a popular destination. With eruptions that project boiling water 100 -185 feet high, the geyser itself is nothing short of amazing. Combined with the regularity of these dramatic eruptions, this geyser has certainly earned its name. These incredible displays occur once every 35 to 120 minutes, making Old Faithful the most regular geothermal geyser in the world. Even if you've just missed an eruption, you won't have to wait long before another display.

While Old Faithful is the star of the Upper Geyser Basin, take some time to explore the rest of the hydrothermally active area. Boardwalks provide miles of accessible trail, leading to some of the basins' other remarkable features. A large number of geysers can be found in this relatively small area. In fact, there are more geysers in this two-square-mile area than can be found anywhere else in the world. One quarter of all geysers in the world can be found in this small area!

While Old Faithful is the most famous, other geysers, springs, and pools in the Upper Geyser Basin definitely rival Old Faithful in terms of most spectacular. Take your time to make an evaluation for yourself, as each feature offers something different. Some hiss and bubble, others gurgle or roar, and yet others provide superheated pools that are home to bizarre bacteria. Many of these features have intricately interconnected plumbing and often behave in concert with each other. As one geyser erupts, you may see one pool’s water levels drop dramatically. The Upper Geyser Basin puts on a spectacular show every day and makes geology come alive.

Short Walk: This crowded area features a large parking lot, which is often filled. Visitors can expect a moderate walk from the parking area to the geysers.
