Dark Hollow Falls [Suggest Edits]

Description

Dark Hollow Falls have become one of, if not the most iconic destination in Shenandoah National Park and maybe even all of Virginia. This highly photographed series of cascades is easily accessible and provides a huge reward for a fairly manageable run from Skyline Drive.

The falls are fed by the Hogcamp Branch, which is visible from the trail, as it plummets around 70' down a series of ledges and weathered bedrock.

As the name implies, this area is often shaded making for even light to take long exposure pictures. This is a beautiful scene during the autumn months as the leaves begin to change, and the water continues to spill down the cliff.

This water feature is entirely dependent on the annual precipitation and water table. Be aware after long periods of drought that the falls can be greatly reduced. The opposite can also be true, with high amounts of rain leading to a full flowing waterfall.

This is a very popular run, so get an early start if you want to avoid the crowds and please respect the signage and stay on the trail.

Long Walk: Use the Dark Hollow Falls Parking Area near mile marker 50.7. The Dark Hollow Falls trail is just over a mile. Don't let the distance fool you! With over 300' of elevation change, this route will get your blood flowing.
