Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel [Suggest Edits]
Description
When visiting a park as awe-inspiring as Yellowstone can be, many visitors find it tough to leave at the end of the day! Luckily, there are a variety of accommodations, and the Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel happens to be one of the most historic. This hotel was constructed in the early 1880’s when most visitors arrived not by car but by rail and horse-drawn carriage. The original structure had four floors and 141 rooms.
Since its original opening, the structure has undergone various renovations to update and maintain the building, though visitors today won’t find many signs of the original hotel. In 1936, the original structure was torn down, and the hotel as it appears today was opened. Some of the oldest structures in Yellowstone can be seen near the hotel, and visitors staying at Mammoth Springs will enjoy learning a bit about how the area was first settled, the military history of Yellowstone including the Fort, and what visiting the park would have been like in the opening days of the park. Since Yellowstone has been a tourist destination for over a century, an abundance of artist rendered pictures and photographs preserve the history of the area, illuminating various stages of construction and habitation.
The historic aspects of the park aren’t the only draw to this scenic hotel, and many visitors enjoy observing herds of elk that make their way through the town of Mammoth. The green lawns that are maintained in the area are a popular snack among four-footed guests, and it’s not uncommon to share the grass with the wildlife. Though elk may appear docile, please remember that they are wild animals who need space.
This beautiful historic destination is a great place to rest a weary head before another day of exploration in Yellowstone, and it is worth a visit to those passing through the area.
On the Road: Conveniently located in the Mammoth Terraces area, visitors won't have to travel far from their vehicle to their room.
