Rachel Carson Homestead [Suggest Edits]
Description
While not the most glamorous or exciting of landmarks, Rachel Carson was a leader in environmentalism, bringing to the forefront human's misuse of chemicals, such as DDT. Her work inspired discussion on the preservation of our natural resources. In many ways, she can be viewed as a main contributor to the trails that are blazed, maintained, and enjoyed by millions each year. She not only is remembered by her homestead, but also by the trail bearing her name, the summer solstice Rachel Carson Challenge, which traverses her trail, and the Rachel Carson bridge in downtown Pittsburgh.
Her homestead can be found, ironically, nestled among smokestacks in Springdale, PA, just outside Pittsburgh, and residing along the Rachel Carson Trail.
On the Road: There is street parking along Marion Ave.
