Description

Though J.O. Langford's grand bathhouse has long deteriorated into the landscape since its construction in 1906, the hot spring is still contained by the original building's foundation. This relic is a sight to see and experience after a day in the park or first thing in the morning when the temperature is still cool enough to warrant a nice, long soak in the 105° water. The pool sits on the north bank of the Rio Grande, directly across from the US-Mexico border.

The water from the spring is thought of as old, fossil water, which is both ancient and irreplaceable. Heated below ground, the water contains dissolved minerals and salts that many believe to have healing powers. Additionally, the heat of the water is thought to encourage restorative processes in the body to help with sore and aching muscles.

This barebones pool can be submerged when the water level of the river rises. When this happens, debris and silt can be deposited in the pool. Though much of the mud and sticks are cleared, be careful when exploring the water.

Also, please be aware that some hot springs can cause burns due to scalding water temperatures or sometimes from the acidic nature of the water chemistry. Use caution when soaking and limit the exposure of children to the warm waters.

Short Walk: From the closer Hot Springs Historic Trail trailhead and parking area, this out-and-back route comes in just over a half mile total. For a longer option, visitors can take the Hot Springs Canyon Trail from the Daniel's Ranch Picnic Area for a five-mile, out-and-back route.
