Hen Wallow Falls [Suggest Edits]

Description

The Hen Wallow Fall is a beautiful waterfall located along Hen Wallow Creek. This is 90-foot waterfall is one of the lesser-visited falls in Great Smoky Mountain National Park, and runners will enjoy the quiet run to the falls as well as the view of the falls themselves.

Hen Wallow Creek is a mere 2 feet wide at the top of the falls, but it fans out impressively to nearly 20 feet at the base. The falls are surrounded by a dense hemlock and hardwood forest typical of the region that adds to the peaceful nature of the falls. While exploring the area, be sure to keep an eye open for the many salamanders (there are 30 species in the park!) that can be found in the water at the base of the falls. During particularly cold winters, Hen Wallow Falls will freeze into an amazing column of ice which is equally worth a run to see.

Half-Day Run: From one of the parking areas at Cosby Campground, start out of the Gabes Mountain Trail. Just over two miles into the Gabes Mountain Trail, look for a signed side trail leads to the base of the falls by way of steep switchbacks.
