Description

It's no secret that geologic processes are one of the most prevalent aspects of Capitol Reef National Park. No matter how you approach the park, or where you go within the boundaries, it is difficult to miss the incredible geologic features found here.

While many enjoy being up close and personal with water-carved narrows, there is something to be said for taking a step back to admire the bigger picture. There is no better place to take in the sweeping vistas of the Waterpocket Fold than the Strike Valley Overlook. From this vantage point, you'll be able to clearly see the sweeping lines and curving faults that created this incredible landscape. Most of the geologic units are upturned and easily visible, from buff Navajo sandstone to the dark shales of the Moenkopi Formation. Fantastic buttes rise above sharply upturned stratigraphic beds, and scenic ridgelines curve away in both directions. Words can't appropriately capture this scenic spot, and it's best to experience it first hand.

The best times to visit are at dawn and dusk when the color of the stone will be accentuated by a colorful sky. However, the road to the parking area can be rough (especially in the dark), and this area is equally scenic during the daylight hours.

Long Walk: If you're driving a 4wd vehicle, you'll be able to drive to within a mile of the overlook. Visitors in 2wd or low-clearance vehicles can test their ability or park at another trailhead 3 miles from the overlook and run in.
