Description

If you're traveling to Denali with your family, or if you have an affinity for the fluffiest rangers in the park, it will be difficult to pass up a visit to the Denali Sled Dog Kennels.

Much like service dogs trained to assist with everyday tasks, the sled dogs at the Denali Kennels are working dogs and are a vital part of maintaining the park. The Denali dogs are charged with aiding in the winter maintenance of the park boundaries, protecting wildlife, and preserving wilderness for future use. In extreme temperatures and in remote settings, the sled dogs are often more reliable than machinery, making their use a necessity for park rangers.

In addition to their practical responsibilities, the Denali sled dogs preserve traditions integral to the settling of the area. Since time immemorial, dogs have been aiding in the winter travel of Alaska's residents, and the story of Alaskan history wouldn't be the same without them. By continuing the use of the dogs, the park ensures that the Native Alaskan and pioneer experiences are remembered. Additionally, the presence of the dogs allows visitors to better understand mushing through demonstrations given daily.

It is free to visit the kennels, and reservations are not required. If you'd like to learn more about the kennels, sled dog demonstrations, summer puppies, or how to adopt a retiree, check out the Denali Kennels webpage.

Short Walk: In the summer months, visitors can choose between taking a free shuttle to the kennels or can navigate 1.5 miles of easy trail to reach the kennels. There is no parking available to the public at the kennels.

Mostly Dry - Even with the rain, it's not too muddy. Just be careful on rocks. They're slippery.
