Description

While Redwood National Park is home to scenic prairies, untamed riverways, woodlands, and rugged coastlines, the real draw to the park are the redwood trees. There's no better place to admire the incredible size of these long-lived giants than the Tall Trees Grove. Once the home of the tallest tree in the world (sadly the crown died out, dropping the tree to #34), visitors on the ground will enjoy the thrill of comparing their own size to that of the towering redwoods that call the grove home. Most of the trees are over 300 feet tall, making them the equivalent size of a 30-story building!

What is it about these trees that allow them to grow to such enormous sizes? Scientists still aren't sure of the answer to that question. What we do know is that the damp, coastal environment of the North Coast provides the perfect habitat for redwoods, the only such habitat in the world! A combination of the rich soils, periodic wildfire, and plenty of moisture allow redwoods to thrive, with most trees living of upwards of 600 years. Some redwoods have been recorded as being 2,000 years old! The longevity and immense size of these trees inspires a sense of wonder that visitors won't soon forget.

Half-Day Run: From the single lane access road, runners must park their cars and take a 4-mile trail to reach the flats where these spectacular specimens reside.
