Valley of Goblins [Suggest Edits]
Description
A mostly flat expanse with abundant clusters of small hoodoos, locally called "goblins." This area was first discovered by cowboys searching for cattle. Later, in the 1920s, Arthur Chaffin, the owner/operator of the Hite Ferry, came across this location. Chaffin returned in 1949 and spent several days exploring the zone. The area was acquired by the state of Utah in 1964.
This valley provides a fantastic display of geologic history. Layers of rock are exposed in eroded cliffs. Due to the hardness (or lack thereof) of the rocks, some erode faster than others. The softer rock is transported by wind and water, leaving the harder rock behind: the goblins, which are smoothed and further shaped by water and wind.
Short Run: There are three distinct valleys in Goblin Valley SP. To see them all would require a decently long run. However, to just see some of the goblins up close, you'll only need to run a short distance from your car and down some steps.
