Crested Saguaro [Suggest Edits]
Description
You are sure to enjoy the sight of this rare Crested Saguaro. It is estimated that only 1 in 10,000 Saguaro's are crested. The Saguaro Cactus (Carnegia gigantea) is a trademark symbol of the Sonoran Desert. What causes the rare crested mutation is unknown. A couple popular theories is that it is either a response to environmental event like a freeze or it might be a hormonal imbalance that affects the amount of pleats that are grown.
Short Run: It'a approximately 3 miles if departing from the Richard Gesner Trailhead. This crested is approximately 20 yards on the north side of the trail and can easily be enjoyed from the trail.
