Sutherland Falls [Suggest Edits]
Description
At 1904 feet (580 meters), Sutherland Falls is the second highest waterfall in New Zealand and among the highest waterfalls in the world. It was first discovered by Donald Sutherland and John Mackay in 1880. Apparently Mackay got to name the first waterfall that they came across (slightly further north) and Sutherland was to name the next one after that. This turned out to be a significantly bigger waterfall that Sutherland initially claimed to be over 1000 meters tall. Sutherland Falls is a multi-step waterfall sourced from Lake Quill.
Overnight Trip: Sutherland Falls can only be accessed from the Milford Track which is a multi-day run across Fiordland National Park.
