Sunken Forest [Suggest Edits]

Description

The Sunken Forest is a maritime holly forest. This is a globally unique ecosystem that can only be found in one other place in the world. This forest and many of its trees are between 200 and 300 years old. Not only is this place important ecologically, but it is also beautiful. There is plenty of interesting and unique flora and fauna to be appreciated in the forest as well.

Short Walk: It is a bit tricky to get to this area because it is only accessible by way of a ferry from Long Island or from either of the carless communities that sandwich the area. However, once you are in the area, the Sunken Forest is easily accessed by way of the Sunken Forest Trail. This is a boardwalk through the forest. There is a self-guided nature trail available and there are daily ranger-led hikes throughout the summer.
