Fire Island Lighthouse [Suggest Edits]
Description
This lighthouse was built between 1857 and 1858 to replace an older and much smaller structure. It continued being integral to ship navigation in the area until 1986 when it was finally decommissioned. Now it stands as a reminder of this history. The area now includes the light, a small museum and gift shop, as well as a museum for the famous Fresnel lens that once was part of the light's apparatus. However, the coolest attraction is the ability to climb the light. Atop 182 steps, lie incredible, unobstructed, 360-degree views of Fire Island, Long Island, and the surrounding area. Altogether this is a unique and iconic part of the seashore.
Short Walk: This structure is only accessible by way of the Fire Island Lighthouse Nature Trail. This boardwalk is a little over half a mile long and begins at Field 5 of Robert Moses State Park.
