Lead Cove Trail as the sun begins to set.
The trail climbs to the Appalachian Trail at the crest of the Smokies. This means that even though the trail may be clear when you start, you can be in snow by the time you finish in the winter.
Looking back towards east, notice there is no snow on the lower peaks.
In the winter as the snow melts, water can run along the trail until it finds its way downhill to a stream. Make sure you have appropriate footwear.
The trail levels out for a little bit, offering a reprieve from the climbing that you have done since you started.
Hickory Tree Branch makes its way across the trail.
