The Carlon Picnic Area cutoff is little more than a game trail used by fishermen as they look for great spots along the South Fork of the Tuolumne River, which meanders along the trail and you have to figure out how to cross as there is no bridge.
The South Fork of the Tuolumne River meanders alongside the trail. Popular with fishermen, there are several good swimming holes along the trail that allow you to cool off.
The trail breaks off to the left and climbs up the hillside so that you can get closer to the falls and have a better chance at getting to the top of the falls.
