These forests were lush with sword fern (shown here) as well as deer fern, maidenhair fern, coralroot, bleeding heart, corydalis, bunchberry, twinflower, pipsissewa, and other native plants.
Maidenhair Falls. The trail crosses the Wynoochee River West Branch on a sturdy footbridge at this point (a little east of the Hiking Project's blue line - the location matches the white trail shown on the base map).

Large pines everywhere
This classic Pacific Northwest forest has plenty of ferns, moss, and lichens, but it's not old growth. I met an old-timer who used to log these forests and now comes back to throw his sleeping bag on a mat and sleep under the stars.
