The Knife River passes close by the Awatixa Village (Sakakawea Site). The river provided nourishment and transportation for the people who lived here.
The indentions in the ground that you see here are evidence of a thriving Indian village that once was here.
The River Villages Trail leads to the Awatixa Xie Village (Lower Hidatsa) and Awatixa Village (Sakakawea Site). It is believe that it is in these villages that Lewis and Clark added Sacagawea and her husband Chabonah to the expedition.
The trail begins along a mowed path that borders the fence line.
The remains of a Hidatsa Village can be seen along the trail. There are circular mounds and depressions that indicate roughly 113 earth lodges once stood here.
The hike borders the forest and you can enjoy views of a typical high grass prairie.
The trail dead ends at the historic site property line.
The trail ends with a nice view of the Missouri River. Imagine Lewis and Clark navigating this river when they were traveling through the West.
