Description
The Ocean Lake Loop is delightful, but technically it's not a loop unless you combine it with other trails. From it's junction with
Coast Trail - South, the Ocean Lake Loop stays along the bluffs next to the ocean traveling slightly downhill until reaching Ocean Lake. This lake appears to be shrinking into a boggy depression frequented by waterfowl. Once around the far side of the lake, the subsequent steep hillside climb is rewarded by stupendous clifftop views. Benches here allow you to fully appreciate the views up and down the coastline.
After a level amble along the top of the cliffs, the trail starts to ease around the side of Wildcat Lake which lies in a hollow far below. After a short downhill, the Ocean Lake Loop trail rejoins the
Coast Trail - South.
When choosing between the Ocean Lake Loop trail and the
Coast Trail - South, here are some considerations: the Coast Trail is more inland and has more direct access to Wildcat Lake, whereas the Ocean Lake Loop is less traveled, offers more compelling topography and has amazing views of Wildcat Beach. Note: bikes are not allowed on the Ocean Lake Loop.
