Description

A trip to Crystal Peak (five miles round-trip from the Crystal Lakes Trailhead) is well worth the effort. On a clear day five volcanoes can be seen from this 6615 ft. former fire lookout site. Start early in the day if you plan on venturing to the peak as the trail traverses a shadeless south-facing slope which can be very hot and dry during summer.

Take the Crystal Lakes trail from the trailhead for 1.25 miles to a junction with this trail. Descend slightly and ford the stream. As the trail ascends, your surroundings will transition from dense forest to meadows and pastoral forest. The final push to the summit is steep and exposed to the elements. Again, the effort is well worth the reward.

Take in the panoramic views before retracing your steps to the trailhead.

Crystal Lakes hide in the shadow of Crystal Peak. While you'd never know it from this photo, Crystal Mountain Ski Resort is located just on the other side of the ridgeline.
