Missouri Mountain Trail can be reached from either the Missouri Gulch Trail or the Clohesy Lake Trail. From either direction, the trail leads to the summit of Missouri Mountain 14,067'.

Over 99% of this trail is above timberline. Run it early in the day to avoid afternoon thunderstorms in the spring and summer. The only trees are at the western extreme of the trail above Clohesy Lake.

The standard route to the summit of Missouri Mountain begins at the Missouri Gulch Trail and intersects Missouri Mountain Trail on its eastern side. Because of this the eastern portion of the trail gets quite busy.

The western side of the trail from Clohesy Lake involves a steeper ascent over loose talus and is the most difficult portion of the trail.

Most folks only run a portion of this trail to reach the summit and then double back. The scenery along the length of the trail is outstanding with unobstructed views in all directions.
