Troy Built trail is a culmination of everything that makes the Kokopelli Loops trails so sweet, featuring a bit of everything to be found throughout the trail network. The trail, located at the end of
Hawkeye Road, is the far western segment of the Kokopelli Loops and is the exit point of the
Kokopelli Trail from the system.
From the Mack exit, drive south onto the dirt road towards a parking area. Turn right and drive
Hawkeye Road to the west. Park at the small, usually empty parking lot on the left.
Run up a steep little hill on
Hawkeye Road to the end of
Lion's Loop on the left and the beginning of Troy Built. Continue west along the doubletrack for a few hundred yards to a dirt turnaround and the beginning of the singletrack.
Descend initially to a wash then begin a tough, 3/4 mile ascent to a high point overlooking Salt Creek to the west. The trail then trends back downward becoming loose and bottoming out in another slickrock drainage.
After 1.5 trail miles, pass a junction to the right: the exit point of the
Kokopelli Trail from the Kokopelli Loops area. From here to
Lion's Loop,
Kokopelli Trail follows Troy Built.
There is a steep, loose climb immediately following this intersection after which Troy Built traverses a rim. After 3.5 total trail miles, begin a steep 0.5 mile ascent to
Lion's Loop. Top out at a four-way junction with
Lion's Loop and
Mack Ridge.
There are several loop options for Troy Built. The most common is a perimeter loop utilizing
Hawkeye Road to connect Troy Built with
Mary's Loop, and
Lion's Loop. This is great in either direction. If running clockwise, park at the small parking area between Mack and the northern end of
Lion's Loop and head east on the road first to
Mary's Loop. If running counterclockwise, park at the main Kokopelli trailhead at Loma and head west on the road to Troy Built.
