Runner Notes
Some folks prefer to wear long pants to deal with the overgrown brushy parts of this trail.
Description
The Saddle Mountain trail does not actually reach the summit of Saddle Mountain, instead it reaches the deep cut in the north rim, just below Saddle Mountain. The trail is also called Trail #31 to the Nankoweap Saddle Overlook.
Starting from the sometimes difficult to reach Saddle Trailhead (off FR610), run to the east, descending immediately off the north rim. Pass a small knob that has nice views and then up steeply and over a larger hill, all along a ridgeline traverse. After descending to an open plateau, the trail becomes comparatively level for a time and soon plunges down through a more wooded burn area. Recover with some travel through flatter, parched ground before the trail ends at an intersection with the
Nankoweap (or #57) Trail.
Flora & Fauna
