Runner Notes

Beware when crossing the train tracks. This trail is especially busy on a sunny day.

Description

Start by parking in downtown Bellingham around the Market Depot and head south on the between State St. and Railroad Ave. This alley will turn into the Interurban Trail, which heads over a bridge and crosses Wharf St. on pavement before turning into a crushed limestone surface.

Continue on a gentle downhill grade before reaching the railroad crossing. Cross the tracks and take a hard right onto a paved walkway that follows the bay. Sweep along the water, running on the right of Woods Coffee and then take a right to follow the walkway out over the water. Turn left at the end of the walkway and climb to the road. Turn right, follow the road a short distance and reconnect to the trail.

The next road marks the end of the South Bay Trail. To connect to the Interurban Trail, stay to your right and run on the sidewalk for two blocks to reach the trailhead (all area trails are marked by short brown posts with a yellow strip around the top).
