Runner Notes
Since this is a very popular trail with runners, it's pretty well packed down. There are still some rocks and roots that could trip you if you're not careful.
Description
Mountain Mist Trail is one of the most recognized trails on Monte Sano, mostly because of the Mountain Mist 50k Ultra Marathon is held within the same park. The trail starts off of Bankhead Parkway, but not to worry, this section of the parkway has been closed down so you won't need to dodge any cars.
From here it heads east and is relatively flat until about a mile in, where you reach the first intersection at
Sinks Trail. This is a common spot for people to access Mountain Mist via
Sinks Trail in an effort to avoid traveling on Bankhead Parkway.
The next section starts with a gradual climb but then the grade increases significantly after it intersects with
Sinks Trail a second time just after 1-1/4 miles. At 1-3/4 miles, the trail levels out and you start a small descent. In this area, you'll run between some limestone formations on either side of the trail.
Just after 2-1/2 miles you start a climb that continues for the remainder of the trail culminating with nice switchback just before you come to a T-intersection with
South Plateau Loop.
Flora & Fauna
You can see some wildflowers seasonally. Beware of snakes!
