Runner Notes
This trail has some steep sections, but is well graded and has good footing. Nice connections with the
Swampy Summit Road make this trail part of numerous options for good run loops.
Description
From the parking area on the motorway at Leith Saddle, this well-maintained track climbs to the west to viewpoints on Swampy Summit. The track begins with a stout climb through native forest on a benched and graveled path. The grade relents a bit as the track nears the bush line, where views begin to open up toward Leith Saddle and Mount Cargill.
The higher parts of the track pass through open flax and tussock vegetation, with an outstanding viewpoint from Swampy Spur providing a panorama that spans from Blueskin Bay to the Dunedin Harbor. The trail climbs gently from Swampy Spur over open country to
Swampy Summit Road near a telecommunication tower.
