Description
While on
Weakley Hollow Fire Road or
Berry Hollow Fire Road you'll eventually come to an obvious sign with information on the park and the
Old Rag Loop. Head up this trail which is fairly wide and worn to start. Off to the left, you'll see a campsite near the first drainage ditch. This might be a good spot to drop your stuff if you are backpacking as campsites above this point are few and far between.
Continue up the trail and you'll shortly get to Old Rag Shelter. The shelter does host a privy, so it might be a nice place to take a break. Beyond the shelter, the trail turns into mostly stone stairs for the rest of the run. Unlike the
Ridge Trail, there is no squeezing between rocks or really hard scrambling. This is still a trail that should taken seriously, however.
Near the top of the trail, you'll pass Byrd's Nest day-use shelter and eventually intersect
Ridge Trail at the
Old Rag Summit.
