This is a fairly flat trail with good footing. It is often used as an access trail for horses. The trail follows the river until the river makes a big turn, the trail is then forced up onto the ridge. This is the easiest trail off the basalt plateau. The trail takes you past the Rope-De-Dope climbing rock and then past the base of the pine tree that has the bald eagles nest in it.

After passing these popular sites, the trail narrows somewhat. Along this next section, you'll find several volcanic bubbles that have partially eroded leaving small overhangs or caverns. As the trail rises above the river floor you'll be treated to the view of the Crooked River as it turns south.

There are a couple of seasonal creeks, (actually irrigation runoff) that are easily stepped over.
