Description

The trailhead is 3.0 miles from the Abrams Creek Campground and ranger station.

The trail descends from the junction with the Cooper Road Trail into the Cane Creek Bottoms, an area that can be very wet and muddy if there has been rain recently. The old farmland is being reclaimed by the forest at this point. Around mile 0.6, Campsite #2 comes in to view. The trail crosses Cane Creek several times, which in dry weather is relatively easy via rock hops. However, wading may be required if the creeks are up due to recent rainfall.

At 1.3 miles, the trail passes Buchanan cemetery, which sits on a rise above the trail. At this point, the trail narrows for the final half-mile as it approaches the park boundary at 2.1 miles. The trail ends at the boundary (it's private property beyond the park), where you can turn around and return via the path you traveled.

More information on this trail and others can be found in Hiking Trails of the Smokies.

The trail is well covered with shade, especially through areas with thick rhododendron.

There are areas of the trail that can be particularly wet, especially after a rain. Here, you can see where the trail essentially is a creek.

A small cemetery where the Buchanan family is buried can be found just off to the side of the trail.

One fire ring, but good flowing creek on both sides of camp site. Plenty of dead wood for fire.

The Cooper Road Trail breaks off to the right and climbs the hill seen here while the Cane Creek Trail goes straight ahead.
