Runner Notes
This trail would have a bit of uneven footing for a trail run, but any trail runners up there should take this side trail for a great break at the top.
Description
Accessed from the Appalachian Trail near Sun Up Knob, this side trail heads across the ridge to the summit of Mount Cammerer. There are a few ups and downs, though your starting and ending points are at a similar elevation.
After a short way, you emerge at a rocky summit with an octagonal stone and wood fire tower. The upper level of the fire tower is an enclosed octagonal room that can be accessed through an unlocked wooden door. There is an information plaque below the tower about the history of building it.
360-degree views into eastern Tennessee and the Smokies of North Carolina can be had both from the tower and from the summit of Mt. Cammerer.
