Overview

This well maintained trail will place you at 2 different overlooks. Bring water and a good pair of shoes for the +1,000' climb to the top. The climb is worth the breathtaking views.

Description

This trail is perfect for anyone wanting to see what the Chisos Mountains have to offer without going on a full day journey. If you're looking for a shorter trip, just under half way up the trail is a great view point that offers spectacular views of Casa Grande and the Juniper Canyon. Keep trekking to the top and you'll find endless views of the Pine Canyon and Sierre del Carmen in Mexico. Passport is not required.

Be sure to pick up a trail tour brochure at the trailhead, as it outlines much of the local flora and fauna visible from the trail. It's also advised to bring lots of water due to the heat, high altitude and elevation gain. Bring a picnic lunch to enjoy at the top. What better way to soak up the views before heading back down the trail?

The trailhead is located at the 5.1 mile mark on the Basin Road. Parking is limited, so it's recommended that you arrive early. Bear-proof food storage containers are located at the parking lot near the trailhead.

Flora & Fauna

Keep an eye out for black bear. You may also be lucky to spot a mountain lion, or a gray fox along Chisos Mountains trails. Carmen Mountain white-tailed deer, rock squirrels, whiptail lizards, spotted towhees, tufted titmice, and Mexican jays are also common in Big Bend.

Pick up a trail brochure, located at the trailhead for a tour of plant life as you mosey down the trail.
