Description

Starting about 3 miles up the Tubal Cain River Trail look for an unsigned trail angling sharply off to your left, and you'll be at the beginning of this trail. Very shortly after starting up this trail you'll see a mine shaft extending back into the rock. This is not the more famous Tubal Cain mine shaft but feel free to wander the short distance inside for a quick look. It's safe.

The trail climbs steeply and steadily to what most runners to this area are seeking, the wreckage of a B-17 bomber that crashed here in 1952. After exploring the wreckage you can keep following the trail up the canyon, passing the remnants of some cabins from what was once known as Tull City. Eventually, the trail kind of peters out in a small meadow. You can keep heading uphill from here, but the path becomes much less distinct and may fade entirely in places.

If you're looking for an off-trail adventure, continuing to the top of the canyon and following the ridge towards Silver Lakes Trail is an interesting loop.
