Overview
The run to Cecret Lake is a great option for those summer months. The higher altitude keeps this area a bit cooler than down in the valley, plus the views at the lake are stunning.
Runner Notes
This gets pretty rocky and technical at the end.
Description
Even though this trail is short, it can be a challenge and is really rewarding. Starting from the Cecret Lake Trailhead near the Albion Basin campground, this trail starts out with some singletrack through a forest, but within a tenth of a mile the trail turns into a dirt road that crosses in and out of small stands of trees, and crosses a couple of small creeks.
The trail starts to get really fun after a creek crossing about 0.5 miles in, where it starts to go over large pieces of polished rock, and then starts climbing steeply up a rocky and technical trail towards the top of the shelf where Cecret Lake resides.
After a couple of switchbacks, the trail comes up on top of the moraine that dams Cecret Lake, and from here you get some great views of this beautiful, alpine lake, and the cliffs and mountains that surround it. You can get a great view of the Devil's Castle from here, as well as down into Albion Basin and the Cottonwood Ridge as well.
