Description
To access this trail, use the
AT: Potomac Appalachian Trail Club (PA/MD/VA/WV) from the Compton Gap parking area. The section of trail that goes to the right heads to a better, more open view of the surrounding area with some portions of the trail that are loose and tricky to navigate.
To the left, the trail heads to an amazing example of volcanic columnar jointing with large prismatic columns of rock that split when cooling some 800 million years ago. The views on this side of the trail can be more obstructed but there are opportunities to see directly out into the Piedmont.
