Description
The Blue Heron Trail is a 0.8 mile asphalt path that follows along the southwest side of the lake. Biking, running and roller blading are all encouraged on the trail. The trail begins near the Blue Heron Shelter, were you'll find modern restrooms, drinking water, a fishing dock, and a playground.
As you leave the shelter area, the trail takes you around the high bank of the lake. Quickly, you cut through an impressive wet woodland area. This rather small grove is diverse in tree species, providing a home to over 5 species of oaks. Water tends to pool, and visitors can see evidence in the dark concentric rings on the base of the trees. The pooling also prevents overgrowth of an herbaceous layer on the woodland floor.
This last hold out is a snapshot of local flora prior to development. The trail ends on the west side of the lake at the parking lot for the boat ramp. Visitors can also use the Blue Heron Trail to connect with the 3.2 mile
Meramec Greenway Trail. This trail is then used to connect Valley Park to Kirkwoods Green Tree Park.
This trail is also suitable for cross country skiing when the weather permits.
