Runner Notes
Great for trail running with the exception of some large ruts to keep an eye out for.
Description
The trailhead is located at the dead end of Council Springs Road, off Warm Springs. The trail is mostly an old dirt road, and totally exposed. Due to the exposure, you'll want to bring plenty of water and sun protection. It usually takes me 4-5 hours round trip.
As of fall 2015 there is construction going on near the trailhead, so the first mile or so to the old homestead is not so pleasant. After the construction however, the view opens up and you begin to leave the noise of Boise behind.
About one hour from the trailhead you'll reach the junction with the Highland Valley Road trail. Take a left to continue on to the top of Shaw Mountain.
Flora & Fauna
In May you'll see stunning displays of two-toned lupine and arrowleaf balsamroot. Meadowlarks and raptors are common here. Watch out for snakes.
