Description
The Mountain Trail wraps around the western, southern and eastern flanks of Pilot Mountain. The MST Segment 7: Sauratown Mountains follows this trail as it travels through Pilot Mountain State Park. The trail is marked with Red Circle Blazes.
The trail begins at a trail intersection with the
Grindstone Trail about 1/2 way up Pilot Mountain. The trail follows a fire line for about 1 mile as it rounds the northwest corner of Pilot Mountain. The trail is level and well graded.
After a mile, the trail becomes rockier, passing through several impressive boulder fields. The trail climbs to 1600 feet before descending the mountain as it crosses the southern slopes.
At the 3.5 mile mark, the MST Segment 7: Sauratown Mountains turns to the right to follow the Mountain Trail Connector to its junction with the Corridor Trail at the parking area at Pinnacle Hotel Road. The Mountain Trail continues on its journey around the eastern slopes of Pilot Mountain crossing several small streams in this section. The trail ends at the junction with the
Grassy Ridge Trail near the Visitor Center.
