Description
A hand held GPS, the
Trail Run Project mobile app, or a paper map is crucial to navigate this trail due to poor trail markers, especially in the rougher areas. A set of high voltage power lines are really the only landmark along the way. They are also the only spot that you may get cell service.
The views along the way were amazing. I've lived and camped all over Missouri my whole life and this is perfect if you want to experience the Missouri wilderness in one trail. This portion of the Ozark Trail offers it all. The highest peak, the highest waterfall, and a special place called the Devil's Tollgate are all some of the highlights of this route.
Do not underestimate this trail. The path is extremely rocky, and I would never advocate going when any ice would be present. An injury at some parts of this trail could have been catastrophic. Be careful and enjoy! And leave no trace, please. Thanks!
Flora & Fauna
Beautiful fauna can be spotted from this trail. I went in October and the trees were gorgeous. I also saw deer, a fox, and a herd a wild pigs (briefly). They ran as we surprised them in the riverbed.
