Description
Whether it's used alone, or as a continuation of the
Canyon Rim Trail, the Window Rock Trail and its expansive views and stunning desert rockscape are a must-see in Colorado National Monument.
Starting at the Window Rock Trail Parking Area, near the eastern side of Saddlehorn campground, descend moderately from the mesa-top through sparse pinyon pine and Utah juniper to the lookout near the cliff edge. Peer over the edge in wonder at Monument Canyon's towering sandstone monoliths as you take a break, maybe drink some water, and enjoy your surroundings. From this location, Independence Monument, the Pipe Organ, and Sentinel Spire can be seen to the south.
After enjoying the magnificent views from the lookout, continue along the trail, climbing gently through savory-smelling sagebrush back to the mesa-top and parking area.
For those wishing to extend their run, the Window Rock Trail can be connected with the
Canyon Rim Trail for a round-trip journey.
Flora & Fauna
Utah juniper, pinyon pine, and sage are speckled throughout the trail's desert landscape.
