Description
The Falls
Lake Trail is a 60-mile trail along the southern shore of Falls Lake and is a segment of the state-wide Mountains-to-Sea Trail. Section 3 starts at the dead end of Possum Track Road at Red Fox Run. Note that Red Fox Run is a private drive, so park only along Possum Track Road.
The trail heads into the woods and in the first half-mile, you'll cross a paved road. This road is gated so there is no vehicular access. The trail runs through a forested areas with some distant views of the lake. The best views will be in the winter when the leaves are down. Pay attention for the white blazes to stay on the trail, as there are a number of side paths connecting to neighborhoods and the lake. The trail then skirts around coves in the lake and runs along the perimeter of a peninsula jutting out into the lake. This makes a great spot for a break to view the water.
After the peninsula, the trail goes around a cove and passes a big drainage pipe below Possum Track Road. Don't go up to the road yet. Stay on the trail for another half-mile and it will come out at Possum Track Road at the causeway over Cedar Creek. Section 4 starts across the causeway.
