Description
The Falls
Lake Trail is a 60-mile trail along the southern shore of Falls Lake and is a segment of the state-wide Mountains-to-Sea Trail. Section 4 starts along Possum Track Road at the causeway over Cedar Creek. Street parking is available on both sides of the road.
The trail heads into the woods and passes through a pine forest and a couple wildlife clearings in the first half-mile. Then you soon pass a side trail (blue-blazed; 0.5 mile) to the Possum Track campsite. You'll pass a couple of old road beds, so pay attention to trail takes and the white blazes to stay on the trail. In just under a mile, the trail passes through an old homestead. There is a rusty old car that is flipped upside down just off the trail. Right past the car is the remains of an old building from before the lake's construction.
After passing the old homestead, the trail gets closer to the lake with views of the lake as the trail follows around coves and promontories on the lake. In about 2.5 miles from the start, the trail crosses a small tributary and enters State Park land. The last half-mile is through the park and the section ends at Bayleaf Church Road at the Falls Lake Yorkshire Center. Note that this facility is administrative only and has no public amenities, including parking or restrooms. If you choose to park at this end of the trail, be sure to park outside of the gate without blocking it. Section 5 starts across the street.
