The gate for the gravel road is closed in the winter and often does not open up until after Memorial Day. You can access the trail in the winter but have to add about 1.25 miles on the road.

Runner Notes

Watch for the ground squirrel holes.

Description

From the trailhead you head out on doubletrack that is shared by ATVs, horses, mountain bikers, hikers, runners, and anglers. This quickly turns to singletrack as you approach Spawn Creek. Spawn Creek can be crossed through a wide shallow area, or you can follow the water's edge up to the right and cross on a narrow bridge.

Once past the creek, the trail starts to climb as you move along Spawn Creek. The trail has some areas with loose rock, downed trees (thanks to the beavers), and small and large holes (thanks to ground squirrels. There are several areas with beaver dams and this can often lead to sections of the trail becoming boggy. It often becomes difficult to continue on the trail past a couple of miles due to lack of use and occasional flooding of the trail area, however intrepid runners can push on to the trail's terminus at FR 252.

This area has spectacular fall colors.

Flora & Fauna

Evidence of beaver activity, great fall colors, and wildflowers.
