Overview
Head out on this short out-and-back run for an immersive adventure to the Devils Kitchen area. This group of eroded rock formations is fun to explore and climb over. Bring a snack or picnic lunch to set up in one of the secluded rock alcoves.
Description
From the Devils Kitchen Parking Area, head south following the wide and slightly rocky
Old Gordon Trail. Stay right at the first junction following signs for Devils Kitchen and No Thoroughfare Canyon. At the bottom of a short hill with wooden steps, stay left at the second junction heading for Devils Kitchen.
The trail is sandy and flat for about half a mile and then the steep, punchy climb begins. Head out of the wash up some steep steps and then follow the cairns and chopped rock steps up towards the obvious rock formation at the top of the slope (Note: Be careful to follow the large *cemented* cairns. There are a ton of small cairns placed by other visitors that may lead you off-trail). Once at the top, you can wander around and explore the formation.
When you have had your fill at the amphitheater, head back the way you came to the parking lot or check out the other trails in the area.
Echo Canyon Trail,
Serpents Trail, and
Old Gordon Trail are all great options and can easily fill a full day of running.
