Description
To access this trail, you can park at the end of the Rapid River Road above the fish hatchery.
Head south along the river for 3.8 miles on the West Fork Rapid River Trail #113 to a junction overlooking the confluence of the two forks of the Rapid River. Stay on Trail #113 to the right. Parallel the West Fork for another 3.2 miles until you come to the McCrea Cabin. This scenic spot is a great place to take a break, or have lunch. In addition to the cabin remains, there is a lovely open meadow that is perfect for a picnic.
Most will turn back at this point taking the same trail back or get adventurous on what is left of the Cannonball Mountain Trail #55 for a loop back to the trailhead that offers vista views as it traverses the canyon walls you just came up. Be aware that the trail is mostly unmarked and can be difficult to find.
West Fork Rapid River Trail #113 continues to climb to the south for another 5 or so miles. Eventually, this trail will enter the Hells Canyon Wilderness, and climb up to
Horse Heaven Trail #214 after passing the juntions with Rankin Mill Trail #119 and
Deb's Corral Trail #113.
Flora & Fauna
You'll be shaded by a mixed forest of pine and aspen along the way, and you'll also pass through areas where dry grasslands follow the trail. Wildflowers of various types can be seen in the late spring and summer months.
