The road gets very rocky on the climbs. The road forms part of the Tarawera Trail Marathon/50km course.

This trail starts with a fast descent from Tikitapu Road down to the lake before undulating along the lake with a few bigger climbs. There are fantastic misty morning lake views with patches of deciduous autumn colors. You'll run by some less attractive skidder sites and cleared areas but then head through the gate to a lovely jetty and lake shore access before a pine needle strewn climb up through Redwoods to the old Green Lake Picnic Area.

NOTE: Rotokakahi is privately owned by local iwi and considered tapu or sacred; with no swimming or boating permitted on the lake.
