Over the Mountain Track: Southern Enclosure Ascent

Similar to the Northern Track, this benched track is runnable. The final few hundred meters is the sharpest and most consistent of climbs upon the trail. There are a few streams on the Southern Ascent (drinkable).

Look for the Mountain entrance gate (there are signs pointing to the entrance to Over the Mountain Track). This track passes around the outside of the Southern Enclosure for about five hundred meters before heading off into the bush.

This is longer but more gradual than the Over the Mountain Track: Northern Enclosure Ascent.

The view from Pukeatua peak across to the Kaimai Range, Pirongia, Pureora Forest Park and Karioi is fabulous – even on a cloudy day!

Maungatautari is a fenced, predator-free wildlife sanctuary. Birdlife is extensive. A dawn run on the mountain is an amazing experience.
